Report of Honorary Librarian.
During the year the Library has continued to grow by accessions, and the available space is greatly taxed to accommodate it, but it would be a great mistake to curtail its development on this account. Eventually more room must be found for the proper accommodation of the books, as this is without doubt the most important library of scientific periodicals in the Dominion. It is gratifying to note the continued use which is being made

of the Library. Science students of Victoria College in particular find it a very valuable aid, and appreciate the convenience of having the Library within the College building.
Only a few additional exchanges have been entered into; some new ones relating to the sociological sciences are welcome, as this field is poorly represented.
Several sets of periodicals, in particular the Journal of Agricultural Research of the United States Department of Agriculture, have been completed with a view to binding.
The question of preparing a complete card catalogue for the Library is one which is becoming more and more urgent, but it is recognized that special resources will have to be provided in order to carry this out. Until this is done, however, the full value of the Library will not be realised and its utility will be much curtailed.
The Committee has to record with the greatest regret the loss of a most distinguished member, the late Dr. J. Allan Thomson. His wide knowledge and enthusiasm were devoted to the interests of the New Zealand Institute and its Library, and his place will be hard to fill. The Committee has been further temporarily reduced in numbers this year also by the absence of Professor Cotton.
