Reports From Hutton Fund Grantees.

Dr. C. Chilton, who last year was granted £50 from the Hutton Research Fund, reported on the 8th January, 1929, that when application for a grant for expenses of researches on New Zealand and Antarctic Crustacea was made it was hoped to take the collection to Nelson and work them out in the Cawthron Institute, the authorities of which had kindly offered facilities for the purpose. Unforeseen difficulties subsequently arose which prevented this being done. He had to return to Canterbury to deal with the collections and permission was obtained from the Standing Committee to use the grant for the expenses still necessary.

Owing to indifferent health progress has been hindered, and it was for this and other reasons found impossible to cover all the ground originally intended. Arrangements have been made for the Antarctic Collections to be worked out by others, and the Scott and Mawson Collections have been returned for this purpose. Steps have been taken for the storage and preservation of the remainder of the collections, and Dr. Chilton hopes to continue work during the coming year.

The expenses incurred up to date amount to £17/-/-.

Miss M. Mestayer, who in 1927 was granted £30 for a research on Brachiopoda and Mollusca, reported on the 2nd October that a short paper on a new Montfortula was handed in for publication last June and another paper is in preparation but waiting further drawings. Materials and drawings are being gathered for another paper which it is hoped to complete next year.

Mr. H. J. Finlay's report has not yet come to hand.

Recognition of Honours bestowed.—On the motion of Mr. Aston, seconded by Professor Easterfield, it was resolved that the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute congratulates Dr. L. Cockayne, F.R.S., who has for long laboured so successfully in New Zealand botany, on the award to him of the Darwin Medal of the Royal Society, one of the highest honours which can come to any worker in science. The first scientific paper written by Dr. Cockayne is printed in the Transactions of the New Zealand Institute as is the first paper written by Sir Ernest Rutherford, F.R.S., O.M.
