Hawke's Bay Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
President: Mr. J. D. H. Buchanan. Hon. Secretary: Mr. J. S. Peel.
The Council begs to present the seventy-second Annual Report, being that for the year ended 31st December, 1945.
Meetings: The following meetings were held during the year:—20th September: Annual General Meeting and a paper by Dr. C. D. Costello on “Atomic Energy.” 8th November: Informal meeting held in Hastings to meet Dr. McMahon, wool-metrologist of Lincoln College, who spoke on “Wool Research.” 29th November: General meeting and a paper by Mr. H. H. S. Westwood on “Plastics.”
Sections: At the general meeting held in November, 1945, rules governing the establishment of sections within the Society were adopted. In accordance with these the Hastings Astronomical Society amalgamated with the Royal Society as an Astronomical Section.
A disappointing response to a questionnaire sent to members by the Council suggests that there is not a great demand for the formation of sections at present.
Projector: The last Annual Meeting approved the purchase, at a cost of £170, of a 16 mm. sound projector. To enable the Society to make this purchase, members were invited to assist by donation or guarantee. Donations so far received amount to £42 3s 6d, and guarantees to £10. In the Council's opinion, this purchase should not be undertaken until finance is assured, and it is considered inadvisable to proceed at present.
Bulletins: Two Bulletins were issued, in November and December, and their publication will be resumed when this year's activities begin.
Membership: The membership now stands at 90 members. There is one junior member. Corporate member: The Heretaunga Tramping Club.
Periodicals: The following new periodicals are being taken: Discovery, Science Progress.
