A Preliminary List of New Zealand Acarina

[Read before the Auckland Institute, September 20, 1950; received by the Editor, September 27, 1950]

In the last seventy-five years a number of species of mites occurring in New Zealand have been described and these descriptions are scattered throughout the scientific publications of Europe and Australasia. Thus, as an assistance to workers on the Acarina, it was considered desirable to collect as many as possible of the early records into one list. Examination of the list makes it apparent that much work remains to be done on almost all families of the group. Indeed, only the Ixodidae and Tyroglyphidae have been subjected to serious study in this country.

The families are arranged in general after the classification of Vitzthum (1931). However, in the case of the Tyroglyphidae and related families, the more natural classification of Zakhvatkin (1941) has been followed. There are other departures, such as the inclusion of Microsmaris in the Erythraeidae (Womersley and Southcott, 1941). Wherever possible the first record appearing in the literature has been cited. Where the name used in the first record was incorrect, this name appears in brackets beneath the accepted one. A certain number of hitherto unpublished records are included and the worker who made the determination is cited. For the most part, little or no attempt has been made to resolve synonymy; however, I am indebted to Mr. L. J. Dumbleton for notes on synonymy in the Ixodidae.
