Recent Discoveries which Greatly Extend the Known Distribution

1.

Brachythecium velutinum B. and S. Central Otago (K. W. Allison). A North American and European moss now first detected in New Zealand.

2.

Calliergon sarmentosum (Wahl.) Kindb. Central Otago (Allison). Not previously known south of Castle Hill in Canterbury and Kelly Range in Westland.

3.

Dichelodontium nitidum (H. f. and W.) Broth. Akatore, South Otago (Allison); Riverton and Bluff (Martin). Not previously detected south of Mid-Canterbury.

4.

Dicranum scoparium Hedw. var. Central Otago (Allison). A Northern Hemisphere moss now first known as indigenous to New Zealand.

5.

Ephemeropsis trentepohlioides (Renn.) Sainsb. Franz Josef Glacier area, and Doubtful Sound (Martin). First detection south of Marlborough Sounds.

6.

Mittenia plumula (Mitt.) Lindb. Stewart Island (Martin). Not before observed south of Banks Peninsula.

7.

Muelleriella crassifolia (H. f. and W.) Dus. Otago coast (Allison) and Stewart Island (Martin). Not previously noted on the mainland.

8.

Orthotrichum alpestre Hornsch. Masterton and Stewart Island (Martin); Inland Patea (Mrs. E. A. Hodgson). A North American moss not previously detected in New Zealand.

9.

Physcomitridium readeri (C. M.) Roth. Kelso (Martin). First detection south of North Canterbury.

10.

Rhacomitrium striatipilum Card. Upper Hollyford Valley, Fiord District (Martin). A southerly extension of range of more than 100 miles.

11.

Sauloma macrospora Sainsb. Stewart Island (Martin). Not previously seen south of Hawke's Bay in North Island.

Climacium dendroides (Dill.) Web. et Mohr. Rock and Pillar Mountains. K. W. Allison; shore L. Manapouri, W. Martin. Not previously known south of Mid-Canterbury.

13.

Pottia truncata (Hedw.) Fürnr. Omaka Downs, Marlborough. W. Martin. First detection of this northern moss in New Zealand.
