A Check List of the Marine Algae of the Dunedin District

[Read by title and abstract before Otago Branch on April 13, 1954; received by Editor, April 26, 1954.]

Abstract

This list is a revision of that published in 1932 by Mr. R. M. Laing. 153 of the species recorded by Laing are confirmed: 48 still remain unconfirmed and 6 have been removed from the list. 70 new records have been added.

Introduction

This list is a revision of that previously published by Mr. R. M. Laing (Dunedin Naturalists' Field Club Catalogue 1932) and deals with the region between Brighton and Puketeraki on the Otago Coast. It contains only records of the Chlorophyceae, Phaeophyceae and Rhodophyceae. The Chlorophyceae and Rhodophyceae are listed according to the classification of Fritsch (Structure and Reproduction of the Algae. Vols. I & II); the Phaeophyceae according to the System adopted by Papenfuss (Manual of Phycology, 1951).

Within each genus the species are listed alphabetically. Against each species I have given, wherever possible, a list of localities where I have seen it growing, and reference to a numbered sheet in the Herbarium of the Otago University Botany Department. Some species I have not been able to find but have given references to other collections where specimens from the Dunedin District may be seen—the Laing Herbarium, the Herbarium of Mr. V. W. Lindauer and that of the Botany Division (D.S.I.R.). The number in brackets after the species name refers to the number in Laing's 1926 Reference List of New Zealand Marine Algae and 1929 Supplement (Trans. N.Z. Inst. 57, 126; 60, 575). This gives the New Zealand and world distribution.

153 of the species listed by Laing are confirmed; 48 still remain unconfirmed and 6 have been removed from the list and are discussed separately later. 70 new records—indicated with an asterisk (*)—have been added.

In the genera Plocamium, Ceramium, Polysiphonia and Gigartina a number of species have been collected but not yet identified. Their identification may confirm more of Laing's records.

I wish to acknowledge the assistance received from Professor V. J. Chapman in the identification of the Chlorophyceae and Mr. V. W. Lindauer in the identification of the Rhodophyceae, and a Grant from the Hutton Fund which enabled me to consult the Herbaria of Mr. Lindauer, Mr. Laing and the Botany Division.

The following species recorded by Laing have been excluded from the foregoing list:—

Chlorophyceae

Enteromorpha percursa C. Ag. var. ramosa J. Ag. (47) is listed by Laing from Karkorai Lagoon and from Port Chalmers. This species is synonymous with E. salina Kütz f. polyclados Kütz, of which there appears to be no authenticated record from New Zealand.

Phaeophyceae

Carpophyllum maschalocarpum (Turn.) Grev. is recorded by Laing as abundant on rocky coasts, but I have seen no specimens, not even in the drift, and consider its occurrence extremely improbable.

Herponema pulvinatum J. Ag. (73) is also recorded by Laing. This is epiphytic on Carpophyllum maschalocarpum, and is probably really Sphacelaria pulvinata Harvey 1855. (Lindauer 1949. Notes on Marine Algae of New Zealand Pacific Science 3. 340–351.)

Rhodophyceae

Pachymenia himantophora J. Ag. 1876 (469) is recorded from drift by W. A. Scarfe. I have not seen even drift specimens It is unlikely that this species is to be found growing in the Dunedin district. It has not been found growing south of East Cape.

Catenella opuntia (Good and Woodw.) Grev. var. fusiformis J. Ag. 1876 (219) is recorded from Puketeraki by J. Crosby Smith but Laing questions its occurrence as it is a plant of mangrove swamps.

Seirospora byssoides (Arnott) de Toni (424) has been omitted as Lindauer considers it probably to have been a misidentification for Dasya collabens.
